My name is Jay, I am the head honcho who runs this website and I have been running my own online business for 10 years now.
What I would like to offer you today is a chance to get started with your own online business by following me in the article while I build a REAL live online business.
Sound good? OK, Let’s do this!
While building our online business, I am going to walk you through the 3 main business building blocks for starting an online business.
Research | Website | Content
With these 3 building blocks and a wee bit of help from me, you will be able to get your own online business up and running.
But running an online business does take work and a level of commitment to learn and take action. If you’re willing to put in the time and effort, then I encourage you to read on.
The online business we are going to specifically talk about is an affiliate business where you make money by earning commission via an affiliate program.
Business Building Block 1: Research
As with any business, you need to understand the audience. In the online world, we call this a niche which is a distinct segment of a market. For example, infant car seats for girls would be the niche and the parents buying them would be the audience.
Choosing a niche isn’t as hard as you may think. But there are hundred of thousands of various niches available, so I can understand how it may seem overwhelming. But don’t stress, because we’re going to find a niche together right now.
It is important to choose a niche that you have knowledge or experience in as this will make your content more authentic.
When looking for a niche, it is important to determine:
- Is there an audience demand?
- Is there a lot of competing websites?
- Are there products with an affiliate program?
To determine if there is an audience demand, we can use a tool that will tell us how many people search various phrases in Google. In this example, I am going to use a online tool called Jaaxy which helps me determine how many people search various keywords in a given month. Let’s keep with our ‘infant car seats for girls’ example:
If you’re in a hurry, here is a screenshot of the result:
So we have determined that our potential niche has audience demand and a low number of competing websites. Our next step is to see if there are any infant car seats for girls with an affiliate program. I am going to look on Amazon.com and see if they have this for sale as Amazon has an affiliate program.
As you can see in the above screenshot, Amazon offers several infant car seats with the most expensive at $440. The commission structure that Amazon has, is up to 10% per sale, so each sale could earn $44. This looks good to me, so we’re now going to go on to our next section which is building a website.
Business Building Block 2: Website
Now that we have our niche and targeted keyword, we can start building a website. I know, it sounds very scary – but it isn’t as hard as you may think. Let’s discuss what is needed to build a website.
- Website Address (Domain Name)
- Website Hosting
- Website Software to Build the Site
Yikes! All that must sound very scary and expensive! Well, rest assured I am going to show you how to build a website using all these elements in just a few clicks and for free.
We’re going to build and host the website through an business community called Wealthy Affiliate where they offer all of this. They have a website building system called SiteRubix that is VERY easy to use. Watch me build the site in real time below.
